Cool when the heat is on. (ACC 2)
It may seem strange to some, but with 2 good wins under the belt, it was under severe pressure that the skipper strolled out to the middle on Sunday for this, the third match of the 2nd’s 2010 campaign. The pressure came before a ball was even bowled. Although not quite tropical, after the cold start to the season, 21 degrees felt pretty hot. With a batting lineup to match the temperature, the message from the sidelines was clear, win the toss and bat first! So as the coin flew and the away skipper called heads, the home skipper held his breath as the coin came down….. tails. “Thanks a lot, we’ll have a bat”, and bat we did. Doekhie and Rehmet looking very comfortable in putting on 67 for the first wicket at nigh on 5 an over. Once they fell, Bassie and Gert found the going pretty tough. Bassie toughed it out for 33 overs, whilst Rehan, Olly and Ajit provided support from the other end. Bassies sister made an appearance, riding her horse. And the horse kindly left a good luck message just outside the boundary line. Spurred on by this, Bassie showed his class in taking his score to 108 before Ajit, Xander and Hannema kept up the scoring rate for the last few overs, leaving us a very commendable 283 for 7.
45 minutes for the tea break gave a few people time to recover before going out to field. Talking of lunch, special thanks to Jana for spotting that we didn’t have everything for tea and arranging a special shopping trip, seeing 2 hungry Kamboj boys is not a pretty sight!
The strong first team squad always makes selection nights interesting and hearing that Olly and Ajit were playing in the 2’s this week gave rise to a bit of excitement. Ajit always gets wickets for the 2’s as does Olly, who gives the added bonus of scaring all but the best batsmen in this class. Olly had obviously saved the use of his brains for the afternoon (having locked himself in his garage in morning) and 3 early wickets in 4 overs from him plus one for Marvin pretty much put the game in the bag, 2 more from Ajit and one each for Maninder, Rehmet and Rehan plus a strange run out on a no-ball kept Ajax under the hundred (96 to be precise). Special mentions go to Hannema for being sledged by the umpire and Maninder for being asked if he was over 15. How is it that you got asked, but Rehmet did not?
