Quick 1888 - ACC 4 21 may
Is it better to win or take part?
The age old sports question was posed again on Hemelvaartsdag in Nijmegen. The fourth team's second game in third class was a pertinant reminder that you cannot win everything and it is sometimes better to give everyone a game.
Batting first at 13 for 3, the game plan was modified and I would be happy with a total of 130. Special mention to Bob who went out to open and was run out without facing a ball, backing up a little too far, to a very sharp piece of fielding. With the ball keeping extremely low at one end, Nagesh, Richard and Haans all did very well to push the score past 100. Special mention to Philip Spierings who pushed the score from from 107 to 132 with some mature batting that belied is youthful age.
So we had set a target of 132 and I wondered how I was going to accomodate a team that boasted 10 bowlers. Nagesh and Richard Matchett opened the bowling with five overs each and both taking a wicket. Then Haans and Imran took over (two of four young players we had in the team this week) and with the Gimp behind the stumps we were really in the arms of babes or at least novices. It would be fair to say that Haans bought his wickets returning figures of 4 overs 3 for 39 but the steady fall of wickets put pressure on the opposition and with Imran also taking a wicket the score was 80 for 6 and the opposition were feeling the strain. All my youngesters had made a contribution Philip with the bat, Denise taking three catches, Haans with three wickets and Imran with a very mature 5 overs.
At this point I made the decision to give Hasrat a bowl because he had got a worm burner of a ball when he was batting. Bowling leg spin he had two very good shouts for lbw and after the second shout when the umpire said it was going down leg-side (remember it is leg spin!), Hasrat decided to throw all his toys out of the pram and spit his dummy away. Phil then took one more wicket with his only over but the cost of 17 runs was just too much and the game was gone. So there you have it everyone had a chance to contribute although Bob constantly reminded me that he can also bowl by windmilling his arms in the field. Noted Bob!
ACC4 132 all out, off 39 overs.
Quick Nijmegen 136 for 7 off 24 overs.
Quick won by 3 wickets.
