ACC 4 - Zeist 134 a.o -135 for 6
Shall I compare thee to a summer day?
Surely you have noticed that some words can be very beautifulregardless from their meaning. Take the word cantankerous. Listen tothat beginning. Rhyme and rythm in the first two syllables. 'Can -Tank.' And it calls up strong images such as maybe a harley davidsonpulling in to a gas station... But then... what sudden change, the last two syllables are like water lapping on a beach. ' erous' Andnot just any beach, a hidden alcove in the south of france with thosetiny shells that almost sing when the water rustles them against eachother.
so that is where the Harley was heading. What a surprise. And whathappens when you put that word into a sentence such as 'Zeist are acantankerous lot.' Well what do we notice. First of all that in thisparticular sentence the word cantankerous is the only non-monosyllabicword (notice also that monosyllabic is a non-monosyllabic word). Sojust to make sure that does not throw us off in any unwanted directionwe can add another non-monosyllabic word. 'Zeist are a cantankerousperfidious lot.' And yes that sentence then has a very true ring to it.But of course immediately the question arises whether it is indeed trueand immediately come the thoughts of high windows with omelets steaminginto the breeze on the windowsill. Because you cant make omelets,without... Well to be honest, before you can make omelets, you have tobuy eggs. And if you buy a dozen eggs say, there is always a chancethat there may be a rotten one among them. Such as giving off ahorrible stench because of a chemical inbalance on the inside that canprove quite pervasive once it is allowed out. But still does one rottenegg make the others all rotten? Can we use that plural? Wille Wonka hadsquirrels to knock their little fists against nuts to discover the badones, before the shell is broken. The squirrels around the third pitchhad little to do last sunday because all the shells were broken earlyand all the bad nuts were there making the whole tray of eggs rotten(just to mix metaphors). But it needs to be said not all of them.Actually at least two of them were alright. Best not mention the otherones.
