ACC 4 - Bloemendaal 3
Quell match! In short a cracker! The sixth win in a row. And one we
really REALLY wanted as we have now beaten every team in the league at
least once. Yes ACC4 is the envy of the club if it were only for being
allowed to play on our third field, that has become a batting pitch or
have we simply learned to bat according to what the game needs?. For
indeed if we did one thing right it was that. Batting styles vary
within our lineup as does the ability to cope with the rush of blood
that we are all prone to.Take for instance Brian Lemmens who is nicknamed Bruce because he is a Kiwi who would have preferred to be an Ozzie but daren't admit to it. He started the season batting 11th, but as was discovered on tour - he can actually stay in when required and play with a straighter bat than most of us have done at home in front of the mirror.
He and Haney stay in for 10 overs and 35 runs. Job well done. Of course a wicket never comes alone and five overs later it is Umer and Robert facing the change bowlers which includes a young R Nugteren from Bloemendaal who rips the ball off the mat turning it more than Warney in his best days. Prudence is required, and Robert stays around for 10 more overs and leaves with the score on 84, but only 13 overs left in the game. It is time to score some runs! And who steps to the crease? Richard Matchett. Despite Umer being 23 runs ahead of him, Richard beats Umer to a halfcentury and the two put on 153 runs in those 13 overs. That is almost 12 an over. Umer 83 not out, Richard 70 not out. It was indeed, just what we needed: a grand total of 238.
So after tea we take to the field. And maybe that dangerous notion of a huge lead snuck into our minds and made us relax too much, for we give them 12 off the opening over. Then after 10 they are 67-1 after 20 121-3 with Dick Broggel and Mike Walsh teaming up to buy wickets (Dick catching on the boundary off Mike's bowling ). Bloemendaal however are bang on target and they haven't even accelerated yet. Tim and Mike take a wicket in the next ten overs and they are 195-5 going into the 30th. Tension is rising to tropical heats out there. Up come Umer Muhammed and Richard Wolfe. Umer gets their biggest scorer out LBW on 86... there is a runout... Richard asks his brother to hold a catch for him. But it ain't over. They keep getting closer and overs will not be their problem, we have to get them all out. Then Umer bowls number 9 and they are 233 for 9. Six runs away from victory with five overs left. Then Haney takes a caught behind off Umer which the Bloemendaal umpire gives (good sports as they are) and we are running, hugging and shouting all over the place. What happiness. A great salute to our batting pair that put on 153 together. Richard and Umer.
