There are afternoons when ACC 5 play well and win. And then there are days like this one — when they bowl, catch and bat their hearts out for eighty overs, and the scoreboard still refuses to pick a winner. 219 apiece.

Winning the toss Bobby chose to field first as the bowling rightly laid the foundation, and it was properly shared. Nagesh struck in the third over and finished with two for 23 from six, barely three an over. Pardeep was magnificent: eight overs, two maidens, three wickets for twenty, tying down one end through the whole middle period and offering nothing at all to hit. Shrikrishna (our Zami import) took two of his own, both inside three balls in the fourteenth over, and that burst blew the innings open. Matthew (our new-found genuine fast bowling talent all the way from Cape Town) bowled his guts out in a short spell the brought him a wicket, Suresh got through eight tidy overs at the other end, and Vaibhav kept coming back whenever he was asked.

What turned good bowling into a stranglehold was the catching. Six chances came, and all held. There were few tough ones that fizzed past the keeper, but we latched on to everything we were offered. Kuldeep took two, the first of them off Nagesh in the opening spell. Hamza was brilliant behind the stumps and pouched two more. Suresh held a sharp one off Shrikrishna, and Pardeep completed the set later in the innings. The other three wickets were bowled outright — so every single dismissal was either a shattered stump or a catch that stuck. There is no better measure of a fielding side than that.

By the twenty-fifth over the opposition were 87 for 7, and ACC were all over this match.

Then came the counter-attack. Their best batsman played the innings of the day, 72 from 57 balls with five sixes, and a stand of 97 for the eighth wicket hauled the total to 219 for 9. Vaibhav deserves great credit for holding his nerve through the assault and taking the wicket that finally ended it, and Nagesh returned at the death to claim another.

Chasing 220, ACC were nine for two with Bobby and Suresh both gone. What followed was patient, unselfish batting through the order — Matthew 37, Hamza 26 with two enormous sixes, Ghalib - a fantastic young talent - showed his calibre for 19, Vaibhav counter-punching 30, Daniyal flamboyant 20. Nobody made a fifty, but everybody contributed.

Two wickets in four balls then left ACC 164 for 8, four overs remaining, 56 still needed.

What happened next will be told and retold. Nagesh and Kuldeep decided to have a go. The thirty-seventh over went for twenty-two — six, two, six, six. The next two brought no boundaries at all, just hard-run ones and twos, Kuldeep backing up superbly and keeping the strike where it belonged.

18 were needed for a win from the final over. A single, a wide, a single, a dot — and then Nagesh hit the fifth ball and the sixth ball for six. Off the last delivery of the match they ran two, and the scores were level.

Nagesh finished 43 not out from 17 balls with five sixes, Kuldeep 12 not out. Fifty-five runs came from the last four overs with eight wickets down.

Bowling, catching, batting, and a finish that showed exactly what is in this squad. Every player contributed something. On another day this was a win — but nobody who was at De Linie will be complaining about the entertainment.
