En veel drinken.We hielden ons als toeschouwers keurig aan dat advies zondag j.l op Het Loopveld. Maar de 22 spelers (en arbitrage) van het in blauw gestoken VRA en het rode ACC moesten zwoegend en zwetend aan de bak.
VRA koos na gewonnen toss voor batten. Het perfect geschoren veld liep als een trein. Bij 140/1 hadden Singh (48), Rasool (38) en Andrew (52, 5x6) al aardig huis gehouden en Cooper moest nog komen... Maar toen vielen er rap 4 wickets en hoopten wij bij 169/6 nog goed weg te komen.
Chris Knoll bowlde voortreffelijk, met de bailer waarmee hij Turmaine bowlde als hoogtepunt.
Het koppeltje Lees (40*) en Gunning (41) boorde die hoop echter de grond in en VRA sloot de innings op 259/9 in 49 overs. De licht geblesseerde jongeling Luuk Hartsink (15 jaar) werd niet aan de bowlers blootgesteld. Chris Knoll was ongetwijfeld onze beste bowler met 3/24/8. Mees v.Vliet vijzelde met 2 staartwickets zijn cijfers op (2/36/6). Met een nog wat constantere lijn, moet hij ook de wides zien kwijt te raken.
Bemoedigende start
Het grondfielden was op het harde, droge, en snel lopende veld voor beide partijen niet altijd even makkelijk en effectief. Onze start was bemoedigend. Kothari (25), McInerney (31) en Knoll (30) maakten allen een start, maar bleven steken. 94/1 was niet slecht, met name gezien het goede verzorgde bowlen van Gunning. Maar toen kwamen de legspinners en opeens stokte de boel. De nu inkomende batsmen wisten geen raad met Hartsink (3/32/7) , Turmaine (1/32/10) , Cooper (3/31/6) en er volgde dan ook een aantal soft dismissals dat ons via 165/5 en 186/6 al in de problemen bracht.
Het koppel Ram Ramesh (47) en Shreyas Potdar (41) wist de spanning terug te brengen met zelfs een kansje op succes. Het kwam er niet van, want verder wicket verlies (o.a. domme run out) liet ons op 229 sneuvelen. 30 runs te kort voor een puntje. Al met al was het een uitstekende pot cricket, waarbij het jonge en onervaren ACC uitstekend partij gaf aan het boven liggende VRA en misschien wel zijn beste partij tot nu toe speelde.Verwarrend blijft nog steeds de kwestie van de rugnummers. Zo speelde ACC opener Kothari met Nr.12 terwijl dat nummer volgens de fotolijst toebedeeld is aan Areeb Zoaib die niet mee bleek te doen. VRA maakte het nog bonter door in de slips 2 mannen met het rugnummer 1 te posteren met als enige verschil hun beider omvang...
Kleurmysteries
Cricket blijft een raar spelletje vol mysteries. Van de fraaie witte flanellen zijn we omgeschakeld in veel donker gekleurde pakken. De screens zijn zwart geschilderd en de bal is wit en in het veld goed zichtbaar. Maar wat moet ik er nu van denken, wanneer bij al die zwarte broeken (en umpires in lekker koele zwarte kleding bij 34 graden...) en zwarte legguards, opeens een, of meerdere batsmen, met witte legguards verschijnen? Is LBW makkelijker met een witte bal afgezet tegen witte legguards?
Zaterdag (let wel Zaterdag) 15/8 wordt de (uit) wedstrijd tegen Dosti op ons Loopveld gespeeld daar die club niet over een veld beschikt. Komt dat zien, want het seizoen is dit keer voorbij voor je het weet!

Cricket remains a strange game full of mysteries. We switched from the beautiful white flannels to many dark colored suits. The screens are painted black and the ball is white and clearly visible in the field.
